Web-Letter, Issue 119 – Holiday Doggy Coat

Greetings from a somewhat snowy Portland, Maine. I don’t have to ask if you’re madly knitting on last-minute gifts. I just had a call from a friend who wanted—in mild desperation—to borrow my 24” size 13 circular needle. (I’m sure I have several in my tangled nest of circulars.)

If you’re looking for a quick and lively gift for a dog, or his or her owner, dive into Jil Eaton's quick coat below. And happy, happy holidays to all of you. Thanks so much for your support and appreciative emails to us throughout the year. Your notes are a gift we never tire of. And can’t we be glad that we love to knit? Love of a craft, whatever it might be, is a wonderful gift for all of us!

The Story:

When the holidays arrive, the weather turns cold and snowy in many parts of the country, and it's time to get knitting for your favorite furry friend. This pattern has traditional holiday colors, giving this plaid jacket a bit of flair. Knit in my trademark 100% wool MinnowMerino, this coat resists rain and snow, and is machine washable, perfect for dog sweaters. This sweater slides easily over the pooch's head, so dressing is easy. The plaid is made by knitting in stripes, then working duplicate stitch to create the plaid pattern. My adorable Cock-a-poo, Rexi Martine, loves to don her holiday finery; I think she revels in all the attention she receives when she's decked out in her sweaters!

The Yarn:

MinnowMerino
100% extra fine superwash merino

MinnowMerino is a super-soft, machine-washable, worsted-weight yarn. The loose twist of this single-ply, extra-fine merino allows for quick knits that are cozy and lightweight. MinnowMerino comes in Jil’s signature palette. The 27 colors are clean, bright, and saturated—with the allure of a freshly opened box of crayons. The yarn is great for Jil’s kids designs, past and present, and it’s also great for just about anything you’d like to make in a worsted-weight yarn.

The Stitches:

The plaid pattern on Jil's holiday dog coat is easier than it may look. While knitting, the horizontal stripes are made by changing colors for a single row and a vertical rib is created with purled stitches. When the knitting is finshed, the vertical stripes are made using a crochet hook, following along the purled rib.
