Issue 249 – Crochet Sunscreen Stripes Cap

Summer is all about simplicity. When temperatures rise, I find myself eating yogurt for dinner and abandoning books for glossy magazines. Though a heap of yarn is always by my side, complicated patterns assume a new level of incomprehensibility, and "the simpler, the better" becomes my new crafty policy.

The Sunscreen Stripes Hat from Kathy North is the perfect crocheted summer project. Small, portable, and eminently wearable, it's a cap you can keep in your back pocket and slip on when the mood strikes you. Enjoy the simple beauty of watching concentric circles build on each other, every color playing against the next. Crochet means it works up quickly and with minimal fuss, and depending on what colors you choose, it's suitable for a man or a woman!

The Yarn:

Cotton Bam Boo
52% Cotton, 48% Bamboo

Cotton Bam Boo is a smooth, lustrous sportweight yarn with great stitch definition. The cotton component allows the blend to knit up into a fabric that is soft and breathable. Bamboo adds a soft sheen, and it is naturally antibacterial. The cotton/bamboo blend gives this yarn a wonderful drape.

Beach Day and Sunshine, Two Booklets in Cotton Bam Boo!

We are proud to present two booklets of original patterns in Cotton Bam Boo for Spring 2012, one for the traditional solid colorways and another book featuring just the print colorways.

Beach Day is a collection of five patterns in the solid colorways of Cotton Bam Boo. From left to right, Manzanita is an elegant halter dress with keyhole openings on the front and back, Rockaway is a classic short sleeved henley, Coronado is a generously sized rectangular wrap, Waikiki is an openwork sarong, and Clearwater is a vintage-feeling dolman sleeve top.

The wild colors and pattern shifts of Cotton Bam Boo Print really "shine" in Sunshine! From left to right, Gardenia is a summery A-line tunic with braided I-cord straps, Dahlia is a headband knit in the round adorned with two flowers, Jasmine is a reversible moebius cowl, and Freesia is a tee worked in two directions with an off-center panel at the front and back.
