Issue 332 – Knitted Layette in MinnowMerino

photo by David Lazarus for Knit Simple Fall 2010, pattern #28

It's happening, I'm at that 20-something age where my friends are becoming first-time parents. Now, after knitting heirloom afghans for their weddings, baby knits fly off of my needles fast. Too fast. For me, knitting is a labor of love, so whipping up a baby sweater in a week or two is not enough for me to show how much I care.

That is why I was thrilled when Jil Eaton partnered with Knit Simple to make her Knitted Layette available for free until April 7th in celebration of making her most popular MinnowKnits designs available as PDFs (more about that below). The set uses two colors of quick-knitting MinnowMerino, a buttery yarn in Jil's signature palette. The Layette pattern includes instructions for the sweater, blanket, hat and booties, which is plenty to keep your needles busy.

If time is on your side, make the entire set, as I plan to. Or if there are multiple due dates in your near future, knit just a piece or two. Just click over to the Knit Simple pattern store and, if you haven't already, register for free to download the Knitted Layette (registering also gives you access to their library of free patterns).

The Yarn

100% Extra Fine Superwash Merino

MinnowMerino is a worsted weight, single ply 100% merino yarn with a micron count as lovely as cashmere. This kid-friendly yarn is available in Jil Eaton's signature gorgeous, saturated colors. Picking just two colors to go together for the Layette can be a challenge (I speak from experience); there are countless beautiful combinations, no matter how particular parents-to-be are. And it's machine washable!

If you're looking for the same great color range in a cotton yarn, check out CottonTail, Jil's 100% machine washable cotton that knits up at the same gauge.

Jil Eaton's most popular knits – PDFs now available online!

If you have searched for baby designs in the last 20 years then it is likely you have happened across Jil Eaton's eponymous MinnowKnits patterns. She debuted her first designs in bold and bright colors at a time when baby knits were dominated by pastel colors. It is a timeless approach that knitters love; her early MinnowKnits designs are just as wearable today as ever before.
